Wherever you go, remember wine tasting is a rustic experience in an outdoor setting. Since it's a posh activity in a rural environment think "casual glam".
Yes, you could wear jeans and a t-shirt and no one would bat an eye. But, if you wanted to do that, you wouldn't be reading this. Imagine you're meeting your very stylish friend for brunch at a hot new restaurant. That's your style direction.
My favorite garments for wine country include day dresses, jumpsuits, and cropped jeans. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes. Comfort and style can coexist. No need to sacrifice one for the other.
Do You Need a Jacket IN NAPA During SUMMER?
Yes, you will want a jacket for your visit to Napa Valley. Just like here in San Diego, Napa has micro-climates. This means the temperature can fluctuate up to 30 degrees within a short distance. And just like here at home, Napa experiences evening lows in the 50s and daytime highs in the 90s.
For those reasons, I suggest packing outerwear, like the denim number above or a utility jacket.
Tops You'll Need in Napa
For tops, I suggest you continue with the "casual glam" theme. Pack a few t-shirts, a couple of nicer blouses, and one button-down shirt. I like to bring neutral button downs everywhere in case I suddenly need sun protection.
What Pants & Skirts Work FOr Wine TaSting?
Because of the rough terrain, midi-length skirts and dresses work best. This is also why I prefer cropped jeans and pants. You're visiting farms, no need to dirty up the bottom of a gorgeous maxi dress.
On the flip side, short skirts and shorts also pose a problem. Many of these wineries have odd chairs and gross picnic tables. You won't want your naked thighs touching them. Sometimes the valley is windy, so you also risk an accidental flash if you're wearing a light, short skirt.
If you don't like skirts, try bermudas or wide-leg crop pants. These will prevent the issues mentioned above.
What Dresses to Pack for Napa Valley
As with skirts, proper length is key when choosing dresses for wine tasting. Don't drag your floor length maxi dresses through the mud. Don't get rust on your upper thighs. Go for dresses that are knee-length or longer, but make sure they don't touch the floor.
I prefer printed dresses because prints hide stains.
If you plan to explore Napa's night life or high-end restaurants, also pack a cocktail dress or two.
The Perfect Accessories for wine tasting
You'll want to be hands free while exploring Napa Valley's wineries. For that reason bring a crossbody bag like the one pictured above.
Since it's summer, a hat and sunglasses are mandatory. Stay protected from those UV rays. Skip the lipstick and gloss. Go for a tinted chapstick or naked lips. Below is a brief list of accessories to pack for Napa. Scroll down or click here for the complete packing list.
What Shoes To Wear Wine Tasting
You want to wear comfortable shoes. That means no stilettos, obnoxiously high heels, or pointy toes. Wine tasting involves lots of walking and standing. Have you ever been to a wedding at Martin-Johnson House and made the tragic mistake of wearing stilettos? Imagine going through that for a whole weekend instead of a couple hours.
What Not to Wear In NAPA VALLEY
Since it's a casual community, skip anything too work-like or uncomfortable. Leave the sheath dresses and blazers at home. Below is my list of items to avoid.
Can You Wear White for Wine Tasting?
If you dare! I personally don't recommend white, because I'm a messy gal. But, if you're the careful type, go for it. Pack a couple of shout wipes in your purse in case someone else spills on you.
Exploring Napa Valley
In closing, may I suggest a guided wine tour? I've heard wonderful things about Napa Valley Wine Tours by Gwendolyn. She has an infectious passion for the region. Her guests can't stop raving about their wonderful experiences.

GET Help packing for your trip
As a personal stylist, trip packing is one of my most popular services. Planning a trip, booking accommodations, and researching activities is stressful.
Since my mission is to take the stress out of getting dressed, helping women pack for trips is one way I do just that. I plan outfits, photograph them, and pack it all up.
For some clients, they're not even present when I do this. After work, they come home to a packed suitcase and an email with complete looks for each day of their trip. It's one less item on their to-do lists. If you're in San Diego or Orange County, I can help you too. Check out my trip packing services here.
