Braving the big apple this summer? Embrace NYC's bustling atmosphere by packing the right stuff for your trip. New York is hot, sticky, and occasionally raining during the summer months. Breathable clothing is key. And, you'll need comfortable shoes. Exploring all of NYC's offerings requires a lot of time on foot. Looking for a fun way to spend a day in New York? I love Culture Trips's How to Spend 24 Hours in NYC post.
What to PAck for NYC
Since it's hot, humid, and crowded, clothing for your New York trip must be breathable and comfortable. The best fabrics are rayon, linen, and cotton. Leave your bras at home if you're blessed with that option.
Should you bring a jacket to NYC in summer?
NYC stays warm day and night all summer long. You don't really need a jacket. But I'm freezing in airports, museums, and stores during the summer months. If you run cold like me, bring a denim jacket or light sweater.
What tops to pack for nyc
Again, I suggest light, breathable tops for your New York summer trip. While plain tees are more versatile, patterns are great for concealing sweat, stains, and bralessness.
What PANTS to bring
While dresses are my ideal choice for an NYC trip, I understand not all women wear them. Casual jumpsuits, leggings, linen pants, and shorts are all great options. If I can't pry the jeans away from you, consider bring a light-wash, boyfriend-fit. Distressed options (i.e. the jeans with holes) are best for ventilation.
What dresses to pack for nyc
Easy printed day dresses in rayon and cotton are your best bet. I like midi and knee-length dresses for the city. Maxi dresses will drag on the city streets and become filthy after one hour. Short dresses are not meant for the subway. This is yet another reason jumpsuits are a fantastic option for NYC.
For hitting up NYC's famous nightlife scene, pack an LBD (little black dress). You'll be all set.
What shoes to wear in the city
Even with the omnipresence of Ubers and Taxis, NYC requires a lot of walking. Pack shoes that are up to the task. Now is not the time to wear sandals that pinch, sneakers that are too tight, or heels that cause aching pain.
What not to wear in NYC
Remember "The Strategy" episode of Mad Men? It's the one where Pete invites Bonnie, his L.A. girlfriend, on his business trip to NYC. She returns from a day out with completely black feet. And Pete responds, "I told you. You can't wear those in the city." Yeah, Pete was right. You need some foot coverage for those city streets. A pair of flip-flops won't work. Here are things not to wear this summer in New York:

No time to pack? Hire help.
Since my mission is to take the stress out of getting dressed, helping women pack for trips is one way I do just that. I plan outfits, photograph them, and pack it all up.
My clients come home to a packed suitcase and an email with complete looks for each day of their trip. It's one less item on their to-do lists. If you're in San Diego or Orange County, I can help you too. Check out my trip packing services here.
