Whether you’ve recently (or not so recently) given birth, ate pasta for lunch, or have a “larger in the middle” body type, some jeans will serve you better than others. Most women, especially those who have been pregnant, have a bit of a tummy. I know I do! In reality, most of my clients do too. Despite what you might think, there are several great options for jeans that flatter the tummy area.
NYDJ offers figure flattering jeans for anyone and they are exceptional for those of us who have a “mummy tummy”. My favorite cut is the Barbara Bootcut style, pictured below.
NYDJ denim is also available in petites and plus. You can find NYDJ at Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, or Nordstrom Rack. I use to recommend sizing down in NYDJ, but they are running more true-to-size these days.
Like NYDJ, Chico’s also offers petite sizing in their denim options. I am 53’” and the vast majority of my clients are under 5'5", so I appreciate these brands that cater to us shorties. Although Chico’s has a bit of an image problem--I am consistently impressed by their denim collection, especially for my clients who have a true diamond shape (which is not the same thing as having a slight tummy). Chico’s has their own sizing system, and I find its best to size down. For example, I am usually a 6 Petite and I would take a 0 in Chico's sizing.
If you’re curvier in addition to having a tummy (I can relate)--Paige jeans are a great option for you. In particular, the “Hoxton” High Waist Skinnies will look amazing on you. There are usually a few colorways available for just under $150 during the Nordstrom Sale. You can also snap Paige up at the Rack from time to time. In my experience, Paige runs true to size.
If you're sick of skinny jeans or want something a little different and fashion forward, I can't recommend these Frame jeans enough. They're super flattering and even a little sexy.
The “Coco Curvy” fit from DL 1961 is another option that is popular with curvier clients. They fit tall women very well. If you're over 5'7", this brand will work great for you. I must caution that if you truly carry your weight in the middle, these may not be for you. They work best on women who carry most of their weight in their hips and/or bottom. Like Frame, these jeans don't stretch out. DL 1961 runs true to size.
Denim Shopping Tips
If these jeans are outside of your budget, and you're in San Diego, I have frequently found these brands throughout various consignment stores. As mentioned earlier, you can also find them at Nordstrom Rack or Off Fifth. If you’re not in an area with these stores, take these concepts with you the next time you’re looking for a flattering jean. You want a jean that has a high waist, or at least a mid-rise. You’re looking for denim that has some stretch, yet won’t lose its shape. And keep in mind you may have to try on a dozen pairs to find the perfect one for you.
