I consider denim jackets to be a wardrobe essential. They allow you to dress down more formal pieces, complete a casual outfit, and keep you warm on days when there is a 20 degree difference between morning and afternoon. Denim jackets help you get more mileage out of your wardrobe, which is why I'm such a fan.
In San Diego, you can probably get away with wearing a jean jacket to many work environments. However, this is not ideal. Such a casual piece should be worn primarily for weekend worthy activities--think playgrounds, picnics, and pubs. A denim jacket is best paired with lightweight dresses, knit pants, and suede skirts.
Now that we know how and where to sport denim jackets, let's dive in and talk about the best ones Spring 2018 has to offer.
AG Robyn Denim Jacket
AG Robyn Denim Jacket, $198
First up, we have a perennial favorite, the AG 'Robyn' Denim Jacket. This one is quite stretchy and soft, making it more comfortable than most other denim jackets out there. I suggest ordering your usual size and a size up, as some clients find the arms to be tight. If you plan to layer long sleeves or sweaters under this one, definitely order the size up. Because of the shorter length and feminine cut, this jacket works well on petite women too.
Kut from the Kloth Helena Jacket
Kut from the Kloth Helena Denim Jacket, $79
Next up, we have the Helena Denim Jacket from Kut from the Kloth. Three of my personal styling clients have purchased this jacket recently. For those who love a lighter denim shade or a good 80's throwback, this garment is ideal. Like the AG version, it's quite soft. This jacket runs small, go up two sizes in order to layer easily. If you're planning on pairing this with tees, tanks, and sleeveless dresses, one size up should do the trick.
Mavi Jeans Samantha Denim Jacket
Mavi Jeans Samantha Denim Jacket, $118
If you want an even lighter denim topper, consider the Samantha jacket from Mavi Jeans. Like the others on this list, it is soft and comfortable. It runs true to size, but some may prefer sizing up for more layering possibilities.
Vince Camuto Classic Denim Jacket
Vince Camuto Classic Denim Jacket, $99
This classic denim jacket from Vince Camuto is one of those items that looks better in person. In a great medium-dark wash, with all the classic details, this is a great jacket for just under $100. Like most jackets on this list, I recommend sizing up, especially if you want to layer it over anything with sleeves.
Loft Collarless Denim Jacket
Loft Collarless Denim Jacket, $89.50
Who says your denim jacket has to be blue? Not me. This stylish white jacket from Loft has no collar and copper buttons, making it a style stand out. Just looking at this jacket makes me want to plan a picnic at La Jolla Shores. It screams warm weather and good times. It's a true white and runs large. Order a size down. It is also available in plus sizes.
Ann Taylor Ruffle Denim Jacket
Ann Taylor Ruffle Denim Jacket, $129
Just as a denim jacket doesn't need to be white, it doesn't need to be boring. This is another chic, collarless style from Ann Taylor. It is a bit dressier and more feminine than the other denim jackets on this list, so if your personal style tends toward the romantic, this might be the one for you. It runs true to size, and a bit narrow in the shoulders. Broad shouldered women should go up a size in this one.
Bagatelle Ruffled Denim Jacket
Bagatelle Ruffled Denim Jacket, $98
Another non-boring basic, this denim jacket features a fashion-forward shoulder treatment. It is also available in plus sizes. This style runs true to size, with very long arms. I nearly always long-suggest rolling them up, so this should not be an issue for shorter women. For long-limbed ladies, enjoy those longer sleeves.
Lucky Brand Cotton Denim Jacket
Lucky Brand Cotton Denim Trucker Jacket, $63.99-$79.50
We'll end on a classic, this basic denim jacket from Lucky Brand is frequently on sale at Macy's for around $64, making it quite the steal. The shorter sleeve length works well for petite women. This runs true size, and by now you know the drill: order a size up if you're planning on wearing this over thick sweaters or frilly dresses.
The statement top can be an intimidating garment. Like the statement skirt, shoe, or necklace, it works best when everything else is kept simple. Here are a few tips to help you wear your statement top with confidence.
Top: La Vie Rebecca Taylor / Jeans: Universal Thread for Target / Clutch: Rebecca Minkoff, Similar Here / Pumps: Michael Kors / Sunglasses: Persol, Similar Here / Earrings: Argento Vivo
Find a style that flatters you.
Fit is the most important element of any piece of clothing. Find a statement top that flatters you. For women who are broader on top, a cold shoulder statement blouse is wonderful. For women with narrow shoulders, a puff sleeve works well. Fun fact: the technical term for the type of sleeve I'm wearing here is "Leg of Mutton" or gigot in French. The gigot sleeve has been going in and out of style since the 1820s.
Choose a top rendered in a casual fabric.
Statement tops have a lot going on. You are more likely to wear one if you find it comfortable. A blouse rendered in cotton, poplin, or rayon will be appropriate for everyday life. These casual fabrics ensure your look is 2018 rather than 1820.
Keep everything else simple and sleek.
Let your top be the star of the show. Your pants, shoes, and accessories are all supporting players. This is a key reason to have nice basics in your wardrobe, even if they are a bit boring. They allow your statement pieces to shine. With my outfit, I paired my top with light wash skinny jeans, silver hoops, and blue suede pumps. I chose to add a Chevron Stripe clutch. Stripes and florals are nearly always friends. A solid navy or tan bag would also work fabulously.
Make it yours.
I've said it before and I'll say it again--you can alter your clothing to your needs. Taking up shoulder straps and hemming sleeves are simple fixes that make a big difference. Additionally, wrap tops can be adjusted to your liking without visiting the tailor. For this one, I sometimes wear the wrap tied neatly in a bow, and sometimes I let the excess fabric hang down. And, I nearly always scrunch up the sleeves. Tip: if your scrunched sleeves won't stay that way, secure them with an elastic hairband.
Prepare for the stare.
In a world accustomed to t-shirts and gym clothes, wearing a statement top is bound to get you noticed. People will comment on it. Every time I wear this blouse, it starts a conversation with a few random strangers. While waiting for my photographer, I ordered a coffee. The barista complimented my shirt and said she loved how Early 90's it was. I told her, I affectionately call it my Fresh Prince of Bel Air shirt for the same reason. Go into the world knowing you're bound to start a conversation.
If you find a top that is flattering and comfortable, and keep everything else simple, you can rock a crazy shirt with ease. When you know why something works, you'll have the confidence to wear it.

Here in San Diego, white jeans are a wardrobe staple to be worn year round. Even if you're in a harsher climate, there are ways to style your favorite white jeans to work for fall and winter. Remember to switch out the open toe heels and sandals for booties or sturdy flats, if you'll be dealing with real weather.
Pair white jeans with soft, winter neutrals.
White is one of those colors that plays well with others. Pair your white jeans with light grey cardigans, tan coats, and beige vests. Layering these pale, soft neutrals will give your outfit a luxurious feel.
Wear your denim on top.
Pair a lighter tone chambray shirt or jean jacket with your white jeans for a casual, stylish vibe. Add tan, light brown, and gold accessories to create visual interest.
Go edgy with black, white, and red.
Not for the faint of heart, black and white can be an overpowering combination for some. On the right person with the right attitude (think Gwen Stefani), black and white can sing. I like to add a pop of red in the form of a statement blazer or leather jacket. Adding red stops a pure black and white combo from overpowering your features.
Embrace casual cute with a plaid shirt.
Here we have another black, white, and red combination. This time we've made it less edgy and more casual by pairing a plaid shirt with the white jeans. Look for a plaid shirt that has the same shade of white in it as your jeans. The easiest way to do this is to take the jeans with your when you go shopping so you can be sure they match.
Get girly in a pink sweater.
Similar to the other soft neutrals, a pastel pink looks cozy and luxurious next to white jeans. If girly glam style is your thing, add a statement necklace and nude heels to complete the look.
