Today I celebrate 6 months of blogging! Well, six months of blogging here. My first side job, in a long series of them throughout my life, was writing for a website targeting college students. We didn't call it blogging back then, but that's certainly what it was. That was 12 years ago!
Since I received a great response from my post aboutthe best jeans when you have tummy, I thought I would share some affordable alternatives.
#1 Old Navy Rockstar Jeans
Old Navy's rockstar jeans are very flattering in this dark wash. Typically priced around $29, they are available in tall and petite lengths so you can avoid a trip to the tailor. Old Navy runs true to size.
#2 Trendy Target Jeans
I don't like spending major money on trendy items. If I want to try a trend, I go to a consignment store or Target. I recommend the same to my clients. Spend more on the pieces that are going to be worn dozens of times for years and years. Spend less on a funky pair of "of-the-moment" jeans. Looking to get in on the step-hem trend that's flooding your Instagram feed? Here's an affordable pair from Target that checks all the boxes. Target's trend jeans range in price from $20-$40, depending on the sales. Target jeans run true to size.
#3 H&M Shaping Skinny Regular Jeans
Be careful when shopping for jeans at H&M, especially in store. There are dozens of crazy options to sort through. You want these -- the Shaping Skinny Regular Jeans. And you want to go up a size or two. H&M cuts their clothes for teenagers. For example, a woman who usually wears a 29 would wear a size 31 from H&M. These jeans are currently on sale for $20, and regularly retail around $50.
#4 Gap High Rise Skinny Jeans
These Gap High Rise Skinny Jeans are on sale for $48.97. They are also available in black. A high rise is great for those of us with tummies. If you are petite, these will be full length on you. They are available in tall. Gap jeans run true to size.
#5 Ava & Viv Jeans
For those who need a size 14 and up, Target's Ava &Viv line offers a very cute skinny jean option. The dark blue (pictured above) is very flattering. Avoid that medium wash like the plague. All that whiskering at the hips and sandblasting on the thighs will make anyone look 20 lbs heavier. Denim manufactures--please make a light wash jean that is actually flattering!
#6 Articles of Society Mya Jeans
These Mya Skinny Jeans from Nordstrom retail for $59. They're at the higher end of affordable options, and they feel more like premium denim than the other jeans on this list. AOS runs large, so order one size down. For example, a size 29 woman would want to purchase these in a size 28.
Summer is in full swing which means everyone is on Island Time. Excuse me for this post being a bit late! I wanted to share a few of my favorite client purchases from the month of July. While this can be a slow time of year for me, those who do shop during summer always get great deals. That's because it's Designer Sale season. To make room for all those fall wares, stores heavily discount the remaining summer inventory. In the case of the Nordstrom sale, they even discount the new, fall inventory for a limited time. Summer is a great time to shop. Unfortunately, this is also means that many of the items purchased by my clients last month are no longer in stock. See the links below for a sampling of my clients' purchases in July.
Inspired by the weather, bored with black, or feeling patriotic led to several client requests for non-black work dresses. These were some of the favorites that worked well on multiple women. These dresses are also on the more affordable side. The Red Michael Kors dress and Coral Eliza J Number are under $100. The cobalt blue Tahari sheath is the most expensive dress on this list and its only $128. And thank you fashion world for giving me two dresses with actual sleeves! It's such a joy to find sleeves on dresses these days.
My personal styling clients picked up a range of great pants and jeans last month, including one of my perennial favorites-- the NYDJ Millie Ankle Jeans. One client also picked up these gorgeous black Rag & Bone pants during the Nordstrom sale. Shopping for pants is so difficult and I find myself returning to the Theory Alettah and Vince Camuto Side Zip Pants more and more. Once I find a pair that works, I'm very loyal.
Finding appropriate tops continues to be a challenge this season. Most of my clients want tops with sleeves that are work appropriate. Yet, the stores are filled with off-the-shoulder and cut-out styles that only one of my clients will even go near. I was able to find some goodies from Reiss and Boss on sale earlier in the month. Those styles are long sold out. Below are a few picks from Ann Taylor and Nordstrom.
Unlike the dismal selection of tops, I've found a wealth of stylish and comfortable shoe options. Here are some that clients purchased last month.
Unfortunately, even the best brick and mortar stores have limited options in plus sizes ranges, which is why I prefer online shopping for these clients. Online I'm able to find a wider selection and more sizes. Additionally, for plus size women who really enjoy Fashion-with-a-capital-F, shopping online is the best way to get your hands on some fabulous designer pieces. Below are some of my favorite online retailers for plus size style.
High End Plus Size Online Retailers
Nordstrom is a great store for most clothing and their online plus size options are no exception. You can find stylish and professional pieces from Lafayette 148, Eileen Fisher, and Adrianna Papell here. They also have a range of more affordable lines like City Chic and Dorothy Perkins.
While we no longer have a Saks department store in San Diego, we are fortunate to still have access to their jaw-dropping online inventory. This is where you'll find higher end designers like Caroline Rose, Stizzoli, and Marina Rinaldi. Rinaldi in particular is one of my go-to brands for plus size fashionistas.
For curvier women who lean more bohemian than corporate with their personal style, Neiman's has you covered. They offer eclectic brands like Johnny Was, Tolani, and Rachel Pally. With both Saks and Neiman's, you will also find plenty of wardrobe staples from the likes of Nic + Zoe and Eileen Fisher.
Discount Plus Size Retailers Online
For high style at a low price, I recommend going to the downmarket version of the stores mentioned above. Check out the plus size offerings at NordstromRack.Com, Neiman Marcus' LastCall.com, or SaksOff5th.com.
Another fun option for budget conscious, plus size ladies is ModCloth, though the quality can be hit or miss. ModCloth is great for women who like vintage-inspired and retro clothing and accessories. And, fortunately, they have awesome customer reviews on many of the items, which can be extraordinarily helpful when making a purchasing decision.
Plus Size Retail Stores in San Diego
Nordstrom Fashion Valley--While both the Escondido and UTC La Jolla locations carry plus sizes, Fashion Valley has a better selection. This is true of every department though (petites, jewelry, shoes, etc). Fashion Valley is the best Nordstrom in the area and their inventory reflects that.
Nordstrom Rack Carmel Mountain-- I have had better luck finding plus size items (and petite items) in the Carmel Mountain Nordstrom Rack compared to the others. It is still a very small selection typically, which is why I prefer to shop online for these discounted retailers.
Curve Couture in Solana Beach-- For curvy women who want to invest in their style and be treated like royalty in the process, I highly recommend Curve Couture in Solana Beach. They carry brands like Eileen Fisher, Kleen, and IC Collection, in a range of sizes from 8-24. Like many of the Cedros Avenue boutiques, Curve Couture also offers quite the accessory selection.
