While I've always enjoyed summer weather, I don't enjoy summer fashion quite as much. I do not love wearing shorts, in fact I don't own a single pair. Unfortunately, dresses are impractical for many of my daily activities. Finally, my eternal love for dark wash jeans and structured blazers doesn't translate well into summer months.
Yet, summer does present several style opportunities that I take full advantage of each year. I like the comfort of summer clothing--the maxi dresses, sandals, and practical tees.
Fortunately, there is no shortage of fun summer accessories in stores at the moment. You can easily use these items to transition your basic tee and jeans ensemble into a vacation-worthy outfit.
Block heels are typically more pleasant than a kitten or stiletto. As a brand, Sam Edeleman is well known for versatile and comfortable footwear. This orange-red version would look great with navy or white-based outfits.
Rebecca Minkoff Backpack, $245
If I learned anything from multiple visits to the San Diego Zoo and The Del Mar Fair this year, it's that backpacks are back. I enjoy when something so practical is en vogue. Backpacks take the burden off of the one shoulder we normally use to carry our bag. With more even weight distribution and free arms, you may find you're more comfortable wearing a backpack than carrying a handbag. I'm a big fan of cognac accessories, since they pair nicely with black, navy, or grey. I like this particular bag because the shape and hardware add an upscale and professional vibe to something that can easily read too adolescent or childish.
Eric Javits Straw Tote, $420
The metallic sheen on this tote sets it apart from a million other basic straw bags. With the sheen, this bag can go from the beach to cocktails easily. It looks as fantastic with a swimsuit and a sarong as it does with a sheath dress and a pair of block heels.
Ugg Suede Fringe Sandals, $100
These neutral slides from Ugg actually provide some arch support. They pair well with denim shorts, casual dresses, and white jeans.
Kendra Scott Drop Earrings, $75
Use a piece of bright turquoise jewelry to transition your basic black dress into summer. These stunning earrings from Kendra Scott would also look great with a summery white dress.
